In Flamenco Panel, Rut Olabarri constructs a scene that immediately evokes devotional painting and antique panels, yet translated into the language of textiles. The central figure, featureless and abstracted, is dressed in layers of overlapping fabrics that function as paint: colour, volume, and gesture replace brushstrokes.
Domestic fabrics—damasks, floral prints, worn cottons—are arranged in horizontal bands that structure the composition and anchor the scene to the ground. There is no traditional perspective; depth emerges from the accumulation of materials, visible seams, and unhidden edges. Everything remains in view, as if the process itself were part of the narrative.
The work engages with the symbolic and the everyday simultaneously. The title evokes a direct reference to flamenco, ritual, and popular culture, while the materials speak of domestic memory, handcraft, and transmission. The figure does not depict a specific individual, but rather a presence: a body composed of fragments, remnants, and shared history.
In this tapestry, the textile is not merely a support but a narrative language and structure. Flamenco Panel exists between image and object, between the intimate and the collective. Hung on a wall, the piece commands a quiet, physical presence, inviting a slow, almost ceremonial reading, where each fabric retains traces of its previous life.
