Description

This decorative plate is a wonderful example of the refinement achieved by papier-mâché as an artistic material during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Lightweight yet resistant, it allowed for the creation of ornamental objects in which painting and hand craftsmanship took centre stage.

The composition is arranged around a striking bunch of bananas, depicted with remarkable economy of means and an almost graphic language. The intensity of the yellow contrasts with the black background, creating an image of great visual strength that recalls the taste for exotic motifs so present in the decorative arts of the period.

Around the central motif runs a delicate border of small flowers and leaves, hand-painted in shades of red, ochre and gold. This ornamental frame brings rhythm to the composition and reveals the care with which each piece was individually decorated, making no two examples exactly alike.

The surface preserves a natural patina and small traces of time that bear witness to its age and enrich its character. Far from diminishing its appeal, these signs form part of the object’s history and enhance its authenticity as a handcrafted piece.

Beyond its original function, this plate stands out today for its decorative appeal. Hung on a wall or integrated into a composition of ceramics, trays and antique objects, it introduces a note of colour and personality, evoking the atmosphere of European homes where the decorative arts transformed everyday objects into small works of art.

Its aesthetic, halfway between folk art and Victorian decoration, makes it a singular piece for those seeking objects with history, capable of bringing warmth, character and a subtle cabinet-of-curiosities feel to any interior.
