Description
This distinctive cat sculpture, handcrafted by Suzanne McRae, combines the expressive quality of a contemporary piece with the beauty and memory of antique materials.
The figure depicts a stylised cat with large golden eyes, with an expression that is at once solemn, mysterious and slightly theatrical. Its body is handmade using 19th-century French fabrics from liturgical vestments, combined with antique fur and other carefully assembled textile elements.
The wear, small tears, variations in tone and marks found throughout the materials are an essential part of the piece. Rather than being concealed, these traces of time are incorporated into the work, adding depth, texture and a sense of accumulated history.
The result is an enigmatic and majestic sculpture, somewhere between a found object, a textile creation and a collectible figure.
A unique piece in which materials from a former life take on a new identity, while preserving the beauty of their patina and imperfections.
