Description

This spectacular two-door Alpine wardrobe, dating from circa 1840, is a magnificent example of the Bauernschränke tradition — the distinctive polychrome peasant wardrobes characteristic of the German-speaking Alpine regions.

Crafted from wood, it features a solid, distinctly architectural structure, with a prominent projecting cornice, side pilasters and numerous mouldings framing the front. Its deep aged blue-green background provides the setting for an elaborate hand-painted decoration in ochre, gold, reddish and green tones.

The two doors are symmetrically arranged into four large panels, each decorated with a vase overflowing with flowers. Scrolls, decorative borders and small ornamental details extend across the rest of the piece, creating an exceptionally rich and balanced composition.

An inscription in German appears along the upper section and seems to correspond to the traditional maxim “An Gottes Segen ist alles gelegen”, which may be translated as “Everything depends on God’s blessing” or, more poetically, “In God’s blessing lies everything.” Religious inscriptions of this kind are particularly characteristic of the cultural context of the German-speaking Alpine regions.

Although no documentation is available to establish its exact provenance, the polychromy, floral motifs, architectural construction and inscription suggest that it most likely originates from the Austrian Tyrol or South Tyrol, now part of northern Italy.

The interior retains its natural exposed wood and currently features a wide shelf, creating a beautiful contrast with the richly ornamented exterior.

The wear, variations in colour and marks accumulated over almost two centuries are an essential part of its character and beauty. Beyond its function as a storage piece, this is a piece of furniture with an extraordinary decorative presence, capable of becoming the absolute focal point of an interior.
