Description
This vintage French folding campaign cot, probably dating from the 1940s, belongs to the type of portable beds used during the first half of the 20th century in both military and field settings.
Its design follows a purely functional principle: a lightweight, folding and collapsible frame supporting a strong natural-coloured canvas, allowing the bed to be easily transported, assembled and stored. Similar in concept to the traditional French lit de camp or lit Picot, this practical system was used for decades thanks to its durability, simplicity and ease of storage.
The canvas retains an attractive aged beige tone, with small marks, stains and variations in colour consistent with its age. The frame also displays a natural patina that reinforces the utilitarian and authentic character of the piece.
Probably dating from around the 1940s and the Second World War period, we recommend some caution regarding its precise dating unless stamps, inscriptions or manufacturer’s marks are discovered that might allow the model to be identified more accurately.
Today, removed from its original function, it has a surprisingly contemporary aesthetic. It could be used as a daybed, bench or occasional piece, with the addition of a thin mattress and textiles, or preserved as it is as an intriguing example of vintage military furniture.
