Description
This large Chinese vessel, or Chizou, dates to the Yuan dynasty, one of the most significant periods in Chinese history, marked by an outstanding production of high-quality ceramics. The piece is made of stoneware with a white slip and underglaze enamel decoration, a traditional technique that allows decorative motifs to integrate seamlessly and durably into the surface.
The vessel features a robust and well-balanced form, with a voluminous body and a slightly narrowed neck, originally intended for wine storage. Its surface is decorated with stylised vegetal motifs and abstract brushstrokes in earthy tones, flowing organically across the body and bringing rhythm and character to the piece.
The finish displays irregularities, small marks, and variations typical of antique ceramics—details that not only attest to its age but also enhance its authenticity and historical value. Its large scale and strong presence make it a particularly striking piece, both decoratively and for collectors.
This vessel embodies the essence of a time when ceramics were not only functional objects but also expressions of cultural traditions, daily life, and aesthetic sensibility within Chinese society.
