“Juande Performing Symphony” by José Luis Serzo

Original artwork by José Luis Serzo, titled Juande Performing Symphony, from the series Blinky, Maya and Los Luciernagos. The piece presents a narrative and fantastical scene in which the character Juan de Mata performs a symphony dedicated to the young Maya. An experimental composition that fully belongs to the artist’s poetic and symbolic universe.

The series introduces Blinky Rotred, an idealistic character, and his partner Beatrice, who have just welcomed their daughter Maya. The child’s birth becomes an almost “revelatory” moment for Blinky, who believes her arrival could mark the beginning of a new generation capable of transforming the world into something more harmonious.

Within this context, the artistic group The Fireflies, in which his sister Anna participates, prepares a special kind of welcome, aligned with Blinky’s hopeful and almost magical vision.

Description

In this work, José Luis Serzo presents a character leaning over a worktable, focused on a kind of mysterious experiment or mechanism. The figure, dressed in a long greenish coat, seems to belong to one of the artist’s own narrative universes, where scientists, inventors, or explorers inhabit scenes charged with symbolism.

The composition combines graphite drawing with touches of colour, particularly visible in the character’s hair and in the chromatic burst emerging from the object he manipulates. This contrast between the delicate linework and the accents of colour creates a visual tension that immediately draws the viewer’s attention.

Around the scene appear small notes, diagrams, and annotations—elements often present in Serzo’s work—which reinforce the idea that the drawing is part of a larger story or an imagined process in development. Rather than illustrating a specific moment, the image seems to capture a fragment of a fantastical or scientific narrative yet to be fully revealed.

Within José Luis Serzo’s artistic universe, characters often act as protagonists of open-ended narratives situated between literature, theatre, and invention. This work maintains that spirit: an apparently everyday scene that, upon closer observation, transforms into a small theatre of ideas, experiments, and imagination.

Framed and ready to hang, the piece retains a delicate and narrative presence, inviting the viewer to come closer and discover the details that construct this imagined world.
