Description
This unusual 19th-century French plate features a distinctive decoration in which the true protagonist is not an image, but a song.
At the centre are the printed lyrics of “Gai, gai, marions-nous – Chanson de Noce”, a French wedding song, typographically arranged to resemble a printed page. The narrative and popular character of the decoration turns the plate into a small testament to the customs and everyday culture of its time.
The composition is executed in monochrome black transfer printing against a light background and surrounded by an elegant border of small branches and botanical motifs running around the entire perimeter. A fine dark line finishes the rim and adds definition to the composition.
The piece retains traces of its age, with variations in tone, wear and signs of use visible on both the front and reverse, all of which contribute to its character and authenticity.
