Description
This elegant French Terre de Fer decorative plate belongs to the La Mode depuis Cent Ans series, as indicated by the mark preserved on the reverse of the piece.
The scene is dedicated to the reign of Charles X of France (1824–1830) and depicts four figures dressed according to the fashion of the period. Two ladies wear voluminous dresses and spectacular hats adorned with flowers and feathers, accompanied by two gentlemen, one in civilian dress with a top hat and the other wearing a military uniform.
The decoration combines finely detailed drawing with delicate touches of violet, blue, yellow, red and green against the ivory tone of the ceramic. The scene is completed by a lightly rendered architectural and botanical landscape, while a fine gilt rim finishes the edge.
The reverse retains the mark “La Mode depuis Cent Ans – Terre de Fer”, associated with a series conceived to illustrate the evolution of French fashion through different historical periods.
The crazing of the glaze, small irregularities and wear to the gilding bear witness to the passage of time and lend the piece an attractive patina.
A particularly appealing piece both for collectors of French ceramics and as a decorative object, whether displayed on its own or as part of a wall arrangement of antique plates.
