Description
“Michelin” is a diptych by artist Iñigo Unzueta in which a multitude of figures of the celebrated character overlap and occupy almost the entire surface of the work.
The composition plays with repetition, accumulation and layering, creating a scene of remarkable visual dynamism. The characters appear in different scales, positions and attitudes, emerging one over another to form a kind of crowd in which the individual image ultimately becomes a pattern.
The work is dominated by a powerful palette of whites, blacks and greys, interrupted by small touches of ochre that add depth and deliberately break the monochrome effect. The visible, spontaneous and energetic brushwork moves the figures away from their original graphic representation and brings them into the artist’s distinctive pictorial language.
The vertical division inherent to the diptych format runs through the composition without interrupting it: the image continues from one panel to the other, reinforcing the sense of expansion and accumulation.
A contemporary work of striking visual impact in which Iñigo Unzueta plays with an icon of popular culture through a free, expressive and irreverent approach, transforming a universally recognisable image into a distinctive pictorial work full of character.
