Description

In this scene from the visual universe of Hotel Torrontegui, Eduardo Sourrouille appears together with Rut Olabarri, both transformed into characters within a small theatrical fiction created for the camera.

The scene unfolds in a dark space formed by large black fabrics that wrap around the composition like an improvised stage. From this neutral background the characters emerge, carefully illuminated, like figures paused in the middle of a performance.

On the left, the artist holds a large red crustacean as if it were an improvised telephone. The gesture—somewhere between surprise and conspiracy—introduces a note of absurd humour that runs through much of the Hotel Torrontegui imaginary, where everyday objects change their function and acquire new meanings.

On the right, Rut Olabarri appears wearing a striped textile costume in yellow and white to which spoons, forks, and knives have been attached. The outfit transforms domestic utensils into ornament and symbolic armour. On her head she wears a braided textile structure reminiscent of a ceremonial headdress, while holding a small green bowl filled with raspberries, as if it were an offering or ritual object.

The image works like a frozen moment from a story that is never fully explained. As in many of Sourrouille’s works, the characters seem to inhabit a place between theatre, performance, and photography. Each element—the costume, the objects, the gestures—acts as a clue within an open narrative.

Within the Hotel Torrontegui project, these scenes function like imaginary rooms inhabited by eccentric and poetic characters. Rather than documenting a specific action, the photograph proposes a situation: a moment charged with mystery, humour, and strangeness where the domestic world becomes fiction.
