Still Life 3 — Hotel Torrontegui

Photograph by Eduardo Sourrouille from the Hotel Torrontegui series, in which a wavy pink glass piece becomes the protagonist of a still life filled with textures, papers, and found objects. A delicate and theatrical scene that blends domestic memory with strangeness.

Description

This work is part of Eduardo Sourrouille’s Hotel Torrontegui series, a project in which the artist constructs scenes from antique objects, domestic remnants, and small found items that evoke the quiet life of an imaginary hotel.

In the image, a pink glass dish with a wavy rim occupies the center of the composition, held by a gloved hand that introduces an almost museographic gesture. The piece, decorated with floral motifs and delicate applied details, stands out for its soft, translucent tone, which contrasts with the more rustic surroundings.

Around it appear fragments of colored glass, crumpled papers, and packing shavings, creating a scene reminiscent of a warehouse, workshop, or object-sorting space. The curled edges of the glass pieces generate a visual rhythm that traverses the composition, while the various materials —glass, paper, wood, and fibers— add layers of texture and depth.

As in other works in the series, Sourrouille engages with the aesthetics of the classical still life but introduces contemporary elements that disrupt the usual stillness of the genre. The presence of the hand, the fragmentary nature of the objects, and the mixture of delicacy and disorder turn the scene into a small visual narrative, where each element seems to hold a story suspended in time.
