Description
This spectacular 19th-century Sicilian knight marionette belongs to the tradition of the Opera dei Pupi, the celebrated Sicilian puppet theatre devoted primarily to staging the adventures and heroic deeds of medieval knights and legendary warriors.
The figure depicts a noble armed knight, with a hand-carved and hand-painted face and a body constructed from articulated wooden sections designed to allow movement during theatrical performances. He wears trousers and garments made from different textiles, combined with an impressive suit of embossed metal armour.
Particularly striking are the breastplate, pauldrons, arm and leg guards and the large shield decorated with embossed motifs. The figure also retains its long sword, completing the powerful silhouette of the character and reinforcing his warrior identity.
The marionette is suspended using its traditional system of rods and strings, a characteristic mechanism of Sicilian pupi that allowed the puppeteer to control the character’s movements during performances.
Wear to the polychrome decoration, the patina of the metal and signs of use on the textiles all form part of the history of a piece originally created to come to life on stage.
More than simply a decorative object, this is an authentic piece of Sicilian folk art and theatrical tradition, with an extraordinary sculptural presence. Its scale, richness of materials and expressive character make it an exceptional collector’s piece, capable of becoming the absolute focal point of an interior.
