THE CABINETS & THAT FRENCH TOUCH.

When you are browsing through a decorating magazine and you see a wonderful dining room of a typical French country house, you can immediately perceive that refined and country air at the same time that envelops you in a homely feeling with a scent of the authentic “slow life” and you wonder how they will achieve that atmosphere.

Well, it’s easier than you think, first of all I would like to make it clear that it is possible to create that atmosphere without living in a country house or a spectacular house, it’s more a question of the furniture and the decoration you put in.

In particular there are two indispensable pieces to get “that French touch”; the dining table and the cabinet. I will talk about the dining table in future posts, in this article I want to focus on the cabinet, one of my favourite pieces of furniture and an essential piece to create an atmosphere with character. I particularly like furniture that can be used to decorate and that is why I find the cabinet an ideal piece of furniture for experimenting with our decoration due to its great versatility.

Cabinets are decorative because of their function as furniture and because of their characteristic of displaying what we store.

How to choose a cabinet?

Here are 3 tips that will help you in your choice.

Antiquity does matter.

If we want to achieve a warm, rustic and elegant atmosphere, we should definitely look for an antique cabinet. We have to be clear that we will not be able to achieve that French atmosphere with a new cabinet, since the key is to choose furniture that brings tradition and that shows the traces of time without complexes.

The colour

The choice of colour in a cabinet comes down to a matter of taste.

Opting for wood with its natural ageing is a safe bet, there is no room for mistakes and the same goes for white patina, they are the perfect wild cards.

If you are one of those who like to experiment you can always opt for furniture with patinas in more eclectic colours or even painted in two colours that I particularly love.

Size

Before buying a cabinet make sure it fits comfortably in the space it has to go. A cabinet is a piece of furniture with a lot of prominence so it doesn’t fit well if you put another piece of furniture next to it or very close to it. It shines much more on its own.

Where to place the cabinet and how to decorate it?

As we have mentioned before, they are the star furniture for the dining room, they have a lot of presence, they add beauty and are frankly practical as we can store crockery or other everyday objects inside them, but be careful, if we do not have a space dedicated to the dining room at home or it is too small to fit a cabinet, we can always put it in the living room and use it as a bookcase or as a display for our treasures.

The possibilities of playing with the inside of a cabinet are endless, we can use it as a purely decorative showcase or give it an everyday use by storing things we use on a daily basis.

Special crockery that we don’t want to use can find the perfect place in a cabinet to be admired and protected at the same time, everyday crockery can decorate as well as have a practical purpose and books can build a beautiful bookcase at home, displaying the treasures we have, collections, books, travel souvenirs, family objects or collections.
