Description
This spectacular Louis XVI style decorative crest, probably dating from the second half of the 19th century, features a richly detailed neoclassical-inspired composition, characteristic of the revival of 18th-century French styles that became particularly popular during the second half of the 19th century.
The focal point is a large circular relief medallion depicting three putti, represented in a bucolic and allegorical scene. The composition is framed by a delicate border and crowned with intertwined ribbons.
On either side of the medallion, generous garlands of flowers and leaves unfold in an almost symmetrical arrangement, cascading towards the outer edges. Bows, scrolls, rosettes and a richly ornamented lower border complete the decorative repertoire. This use of medallions, floral garlands, festoons and ribbons is particularly characteristic of the Louis XVI vocabulary and its 19th-century reinterpretations.
The surface retains a beautiful aged patina, with wear, small losses, cracks and visible old repairs that form part of the history of the piece and enhance its sculptural character.
Originally conceived as a decorative or architectural crest, possibly belonging to a mirror, wall panelling, piece of furniture or another interior element, it now has sufficient presence to be displayed independently above a wall, doorway or console table.
