Description
This work is part of Eduardo Sourrouille’s Hotel Torrontegui project, a photographic series in which the artist recreates scenes inspired by the spaces and objects that might inhabit an imaginary hotel. Through carefully constructed compositions, he transforms everyday elements into small visual stories.
In this image, a wicker basket overflowing with textiles —sheets, blankets, and folded fabrics— occupies the center of the scene. The soft tones of the fabrics, ranging from white to aqua green and beige, evoke household linens and the quiet life of hotel rooms. Within this domestic setting appears an unexpected element: a taxidermy squirrel peeking out from among the fabrics, introducing a gesture of humor and strangeness characteristic of the artist’s work.
The presence of a gloved hand holding the basket handle reinforces the sense of a theatrical or inventory-like scene, as if someone were arranging the objects of this fictitious hotel. The worn wooden background and natural materials contribute to an atmosphere frozen in time, somewhere between a storage room, a laundry, and a stage.
As in other pieces in the series, Sourrouille engages in a dialogue with the tradition of classical still life, but translates it into a contemporary language where accumulation, humor, and material memory intertwine. The result is an evocative image that invites close observation and encourages imagining the hidden stories behind each object.
