Description
Exceptional Basque headboard and footboard from a farmhouse, crafted from polychrome pine.
It is a rarity, as traditional Basque carpentry from the period is typically very understated.
The preservation of the colours and wood is extraordinary.
The wood is painted in beige and terracotta over stucco, and the decoration features geometric and floral motifs with a central rosette in vibrant colours: terracotta, mustard, and raw.
Currently, very few beds of this style remain intact, and it is also exceptional to find one with both a headboard and footboard.
One such bed was featured on the cover of House and Garden magazine.
The headboard is shaped in a semicircular arch, while the footboard is rectangular. Some of these pieces arrived at the Basque Museum in Bilbao in the 1980s.
